Sams Recall on Ground Beef 2019

If you bought products affected by this beef recall, ditch them ASAP.

Recalls are on the rise this fall. Just in the past week, we've seen listeria-contaminated chicken sold at major retailers like Aldi and Kroger. The recalls are no fun for anyone, but at least you can stop putting off that refrigerator cleanout.

If you've got some clutter packed away at the back of your fridge or freezer, this beef recall is the perfect excuse to get organized. Imported Canadian beef is recalled in the U.S. due to possible E. coli contamination. The recall affects 10 states in total: Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. This beef recall was issued by FSIS on October 16. Find the FSIS release here.

What products are recalled?

The recall includes raw beef products from Ontario-based Ryding-Regency Meat Packers. You may have stocked up on any of these products already, so be extra cautious. Here's what to look out for:

  • 10-pound boxes containing Devanco Foods Chicago's Favorite Gyros Slices (Strips)
  • 10-pound boxes containing Kronos Halal Gyros Strips
  • 8-patty Ziyad Premium Quality Beef Hamburger Patties
  • 8-kabob Ziyad Premium Quality Uncooked Kufta Kabob
  • 8-pound and 3-pound boxes containing Shop Right 100% Pure Quarter Pound Ground Beef Hamburgers
  • 2-pound boxes containing Landis 100% All Beef Patties—8 Quarter Pound Patties

You can find all of the labels on the FSIS website. The initial investigation was launched by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, but FSIS is helping get the message out. Retailers are already pulling the recalled beef from shelves, but these products could still be holed up somewhere in the back of your fridge.

Did you know all these recalls are actually a good thing? Here's why.

I have one of these products! What should I do with it?

According to FSIS, your best course of action is to either toss the contaminated beef or return it to the place of purchase. Most retailers will give you a full refund for contaminated items. If you still need something for dinner, you may even be able to haggle a swap for a different product.

For questions, reach out to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854. The line is available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Eastern Time.

How can I avoid getting E. coli?

Heed the warnings of this beef recall and toss any dangerous items. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands after handling raw meat. Don't eat any undercooked meat, and make sure your store-bought beverages are pasteurized. Raw foods can cause sickness too, so wash everything from the produce section carefully.
